Why?
Without trying to be politically correct, some proactive
attitude is required from climbers all over Europe and overseas, to make sure
that our favourite playgrounds remain open without any restrictions. In many
countries, climbing areas are closed, because it is an easy way for
politicians to show how interested they are in environmental issues. Climbers
aren't very well organised, so they aren't into big protests against such
measures, while politicians can expect real opposition if they try to do
something against the true pollution of our environment by the big
industries. So guess who will be picked... Behind the scenes, organisations
like CO.SI.ROC (the French committee in
the defense of climbing areas and crags) do everything they can to protect the
environmental heritage of France and keep climbing areas open, but it is even
better if the ONF (the French authority that
owns and guards the forests of Fontainebleau) can see with their own eyes that
climbers have a positive attitude towards the environmental issues of climbing
areas. Furthermore, the clean-up day will raise interest about the 'climbing
ethics' of bouldering in Fontainebleau, like cleaning the boulders from
magnesia after climbing. Hopefully, you will thus understand the objective of
the day below. More information about the first clean-up day in December 2003
can be found at this site of
Nicolas Bouy or by watching this realvideo.
Objective of the day:
To clean magnesia from boulders that
hasn't been washed away by rain for over 10 years and to collect rubbish lying
around in the forest.
Materials to bring:
Non-metallic brushes, jerrycans and bottles
for water (there is a water tap at the parking lot), ladders, bags, dustbins,
or just your helping hands and commitment. And of course your picnic
basket :-).
Please register below!
The organisation likes to know how many
people will join us, so we have an idea of the number of sites we will be able
to clean. Furthermore, if you register, you will be eligible for the free
T-shirt, that is designed especially for this event! Of course, last minute
volunteers are very welcome as well, but we cannot guarantee that we have
T-shirts for them.
Spread the word!
Let your fellow climbers know about this event,
and spread the word in your local climbing gym.
