Weather posted by shadowblandy ~ 19.01.2010 16:30

Hi all,

Little question.

Wouldn't it be interesting to have a topic where foreigners can ask for the current weather? I noticed that the weather sites on the net aren't that accurate.
Think it will maybe avoid that people drive 100's of km to climb and arriving in bad weather. It will maybe, I hope, avoid that people use magnesium to dry the rocks. If they can see on the forum: today rainy at font, so we propably can't climb so we don't have to drive to font.

Exemple of the websites: One day I was in font and it was raining, when we looked on meteo france via the internet on the camping it wasn't even raining at fontainebleau???

Just a little suggestion.

greetingz

don't blame the forecast! posted by ghisino ~ 19.01.2010 17:18

dear shadow,

you have to understand that the weather in paris and surroundings is governed by two factors :
-clouds coming from the ocean
-direction and speed of the winds

(hint : england is similar. Would you go to peak district in december and expect the forecast to be 100% exact?)

since there is no mountains and similar affecting the weather, very small variations in the above factors, expecially in the direction of the wind, can make a lot of difference, and it is very very hard, if not impossible to make an accurate weather forecast more than 3 days in advance.

And even on daily basis, it is easy to get it right on regional scale, hard on local scale : metereologists will be very good at telling you the average weather around paris, not that good at telling you the specific weather of bleau versus eurodisney.
When they tell you "sun and rain" in this area, it might mean rain in eurodisney and sun in bleau, or the opposite, or sun and rain in both places.

Advanced concepts:

When you look at the forecast 2 or 3 days before, do not focus only on fontainebleau, it is simply pointless.
Look what is happening in a radius of 300 kms around, look the direction of the winds and think how that scenario can change. The rain clouds might come a bit more on the east or on the west, more north or more south.

If you live in a great distance simply avoid coming if the situation is "uncertain", at least in winter time when most things need a lot of time to dry, or be prepared for the worst.
As a personal advice, come when you have two weeks to pray for the sun and visit paris, or when the weather predicts several consecutive days of full sun, which means anti-cyclone, stable good weather, friction, dry boulders, etc...and learn which sectors/boulders dry faster (hint : on top of a hill, no trees and facing south)

In spring and autumn things dry faster and you can bet on a weekend of sun and clouds...

other meteo sites :
-lachainemeteo.fr (generally optimistic)
-http://www.meteo60.fr/previsions/france-auto.php (three day local forecast, generally a bit pessimistic. it predicts the rain in mm/h, more than 1 mm/h is serious rain, less is light rain)
-http://www.meteo60.fr/radars/index.php (radar page. Here you can see real-time how the rain is moving all over france. Great for last-minute reasoning and to learn how the weather really works...)

but please don't ask for the weather in bleau because sometimes it's aleready a bet if you live 50 kilometers away....

Hi,
have a look at http://www.meteociel.fr/
You can see the actual weather if you click on "temps réel"->"observations" on the menu on the left.
Zoom in with "Zoom RP" above the map.

Still a good idea / qd même une bonne idée posted by Alex ~ 20.01.2010 14:55

Still, it's a good idea.
For example. As i had no other choice for the rest of the week I went climbing on monday and tuesday at lunch break. The weather looked exactly the same (shit) but it was still possible to climb (traverses) on both days but yesterday was much better (quite dry, except for the top-outs). The same happened the last two weeks with the snow. Once it looked good, but as the snow was melting, climbing was doomed (with condensation).
I often climb on lunch breaks (la Padôle) so i can give a piece of news on how dry it is.
Another problem is that the areas where you can climb is quite sread (30 to 40 kms), so with rain showers for example it can be shity in the south and good in the north ...

Alex

big misunderstanding posted by ghisino ~ 20.01.2010 18:20

I tought it was just meteo complaining that's why i've spent many words in defense of the guys from meteofrance (who are collegues of mine, in a broad sense)

reading again, it looks like the meteo complains were a side issue, while the main intention of the original poster was asking for a permission for opening a topic on weather/conditions.

damn, no! it doesn't work this way! It is way unpolite and it doesn't respect any protocol.

I feel very generous today, so here are the istructions for topics concerning conditions and weather issues in general :

first you have to make a topic asking for the permission to open a topic asking for the permission to open a topic to ask for the permission to post in the forum asking if someone has been in the forest recently and knows the conditions.

then we will ask all bleau.info registered users to vote, and if at least 51% of the registered users expresses an opinion on the subject, and 51% of the voters say "yes", the permission to open a permission-asking topic will be given.

after at least 5 permission topics and 5 succesful voting sessions you will get the right to ask directly for conditions.

then, anyone willing to answer should open a topic to ask other users the permission to answer, etc etc...

good luck

meteofrance posted by shadowblandy ~ 21.01.2010 02:40

I didn't open this topic to complain about meteofrance.
Just to avoid people to drive for lots of kms for arriving in a rainy forest.
Its good for the rock and for all of us (spended gasoil etc.)
But no problem if you want to answer in a ridiculous way with permissions etc.
Then I just send an email to a friendly guy to ask the conditions.
Happy that some people understand my problem/question, like Neil, ALex or Erlaak.

the forest looks good today, grey but windy and dry rock, finally we get to go out climbing

jesus! posted by ghisino ~ 21.01.2010 09:52

man i understand your problem, but i can't help you if you ask for the weather after you've been here, instead of before.

just open a topic when you have to take a decision to come in or not and maybe people will answer, is it that complicated?
it is self-evident that it's a good idea, you don't need to ask if it really is.

by the way you can see several topics like that already existing (no, don't bring them up, make a NEW one when you need it, and put in a date, you will get more attention this way i guess) at least in french.
That is why your topic sounds like "am i allowed to ask for the weather as well?" or "damn it, nobody told me it would have rained!"

or maybe you were proposing some more technically advanced solution, and i didn't get the point.

Ghisino posted by touuithi ~ 21.01.2010 21:20

Non, laisse tomber pour la langue, c'est une discussion d'angliches, y'a qu'eux pour trouver les conditions bonnes en ce moment! Les gens normaux ils restent sous la couette avec leur copine...

Problem of conditions posted by jibiji ~ 22.01.2010 12:33

Rock conditions are not known even with a perfect forecast : one can have nice weather and condensation, or wet rock because of melting snow...
So yes a topic would be useful not only to adjust official forecasts, but also to give indications on real rock conditions.

Before, there were guide books. Not sufficient.
After, some magazines. Not sufficient.
After a big web site with photos, videos, fora, meteo websites, gps, satellites...Not sufficient...
The last chances...
Maybe before climbing send Bob l'éponge in the forest. If it comes back with having grown, it means that the weather is not good...
Maybe, you can send too some drones flying other the forest, or install a webcam at the foot of every boulder, or send a robot climbing for you...
It would be so kind, so poetical...

GSM connected and solar powered.

I guess 3 or 4 of these strategically placed in representative sites would beat any topic.

as for the climbing robot, it seems that we are still quite early in the developement phase...i'm afraid you still have to put on rock boots and climb for real.

We are driving a very long way at the weekend to get there and would like to know so that we can prepare ourselves for sitting around dreaming of climbing.......

Thank you

by the way, if i had something valuable to say, i'd ask money for it.

game and hunters... posted by ghisino ~ 10.02.2010 11:28

remember you should thank Napoleon and his passion for hunting if the forest has the shape it has. Could have been better, really wild with no tracks at all, or worse, no trees and maybe a nice factory or a power plant.

moreover, when a dog is young and despite being kind with humans he likes to run after small animals what can you do about it? Tie him to the next boulder?

despite that it is not pride, it's just unusual stuff that happens and makes me smile, even if there's a dark side in it.

and please posted by ghisino ~ 10.02.2010 11:36

don't add that yes, you should tie the dog.

apart the fact that a boar in full strenght will win a race with any dog (so a boar who gets hunted by a dog is a probable candidate to be killed by his mates when they start to fight for territorial supremacy)

apart the fact that if boars come 50 meters close to LOUD humans my guess is that they are too many.

apart that, the forest is an artificial, highly controlled environnement (most of those trees, they've been planted, some have been cut following a precise plan, etc etc etc).
that doesn't justify anything and everything, but in my humble opinion it makes over-conservationist positions inherently comic, at least untile you're talking about "renewable" impacts (the free dog, the occasional shit in the trees, etc...)

finally posted by ghisino ~ 10.02.2010 11:44

i was talking with a biodiversity scientist according to which the number of big game animals (boars, deers, etc) is kept too high, because...guess what.

hunters want to have something to hunt.

it means, that since we don't have large predators anymore, from a scientific point of view you'd like to kill a certain amount of animals, so that they do not eat too many young plants, insects, etc...

but ironically in most ONF-run forests in france, that amount is never reached. Hunters do not kill enough, and keep scientists from doing so - they would go as far as artificially feeding the game, really.

at least that was the opinion of that scientist, mind he could be a serious one or be some freak mad professor for what i know.

ok that's enough.
