The limestone (and one granit) climbing areas of the Bourgogne (in English: Burgundy) do not have the quality of the climbing areas of Southern France. However, for many of us, the areas in between Auxerre, Dijon and Mâcon are a welcome destination, either for a long weekend or for a stop off on a long drive south or to the Alps (or when it's too hot in the south). With over 2000 routes, there is more than enough to climb in the Bourgogne, even though locals were surprised at first to meet foreigners that selected this part of France for their climbing holidays.

Bourgogne onsight - à vue is a typical Jingo Wobbly
guide, as it is a topo guide that fills a void left open by local
authors. There are a number of topos of individual areas, but they are quite
old (most of them published in 1992/1993) and often hard to get. So this
guide, which is written in English with French introductions, is very
welcome. It contains about 1300 routes from 19 different areas (see below for
a complete listing of the areas), although for three large areas the listed
routes are 'just tasters' for several days of climbing. These three areas are
Surgy, Saffres and Hauteroche, so you will have to buy a local guidebook, if
want to have information about every route available in those areas.

Bourgogne onsight - à vue is also a typical Jingo Wobbly
guide, because it contains a lot of background information for non-locals,
such as campings, bars, and touristic information not related to
climbing. This all makes you want to go on vacation as soon as possible! The
well-known plethora of Jingo Wobbly symbols, colour-coded tables and
burgeoning amount of information is present in this guide as well, but in this
case they are quite useful to find the right cliffs and routes for
yourself. The topo drawings of the routes are a bit too colorful, but are very
clear. So, if you our going to visit Burgundy, this climbing guide is a must
have. Below you will find descriptions of all the areas presented in the guide
(the links open in pop-ups).
