With the introduction of the 7 + 8 guide, a proliferation of "grade-based" bouldering guides of Fontainebleau emerged. Currently, we thus have the following guides on sale:

However, one of the nice aspects of bouldering (as opposed to climbing routes) is the possibility to climb together with people of different levels. So, where did the "area-based" bouldering guides of Fontainebleau go? One of the most popular guides (which sold out quickly) was the Cosiroc "Escalade à Bleau, Tome 1: Les trois Pignons" guide, which appeared in 1998. The trois Pignons (nowadays abbreaviated to a funky 3π) is by far the most popular group of climbing areas in the Fontainebleau region. It is therefore very logical that the first new "area-based" guide, called Au Grès des Trois Pignons, would be dealing with this part of the magical forest. And who else than Jean-Jacques Naëls, author of the best sold guide on this website (Bleau De Grès Six), and in the past involved with the Cosiroc guides, would deliver us this new guide?

Au Grès des Trois Pignons tries to give a complete overview of the well-known boulders in the area. Unfortunately, it is virtual impossible to list all known problems in such a guide book, but for the vast majority of climbers, this guide is all they need when going to 3π. For instance, apart from a few children circuits and the circuits in Rocher de Milly, Au Grès des Trois Pignons contains extensive descriptions of all the circuits (and of course many boulder problems outside the circuits). Below, you will find an overview of all the areas that are listed in the guide:

In the Northern part of 3π, the crags from the Coquibus region are missing (which is a biological sensitive area, and the authorities do not like bouldering publications about this region too much) and from Rocher de Milly. A few isolated boulders from Rocher de Corne-Biche and Touche aux Mulets are missing as well. In many guides Les Béorlots is treated as a 3π area, but not in this guide. Furthermore, we couldn't find a reference to Le 111, a sector north of la Grande Montagne.

Anyone familiar with the Bleau De Grès Six guide of Jean-Jacques Naëls knows he delivers high quality guides, and this guide is even an improvement on his previous work. The only weak point are the English translations of the area introductions, which are more Frenglish than English. However, these translations are easy to overcome, and textual explanations do not play an important role in such a guidebook. So, Jean-Jacques managed yet again to produce an indispensible guide book for any 3π lover!
